Those who have visited the Yucatan Peninsula know that this is a state with everything to find the best adventures. Beautiful beaches, lagoons and mangroves, delicious cooking recognized around the world, historical and cultural richness are only some of the wonders that you can find in Yucatan. The most shocking one is the cenotes.
The word “cenote” comes from the Mayan “Dzonot” which means “hole” “abyss.” The ”cenotes” are holes of fresh wáter built through many years due to the erosion of liestone y the wáter filtration. For Mayan people the “cenotes” were their sourse of life because they supply them wáter. That´s why they formed large Mayan settlements around them. They considered the “cenotes” the entrance to the “inframundo” called “Xibalba”, a place where they get in contact with Gods.
In the Peninsula of Yucatan have been registered over 2,000 “cenotes.” However there are still lots of them waiting to be discovered. “The cenotes” are clasified in three different types: open sky ones, semi opened and the ones inside caverns.
Open Sky
This type of “cenote” does not have roof covering it. In the ones called “old cenotes” there is a natural formation which presents a limited water flow due to the roof collapse. The free falling type “cenotes” are perfect for those who love diving.
Semi-open
These “cenotes” are almost all covered except for a small opening on the roof which allows the light passing. They are perfect for swimming and relaxing in the freshness of their water.
Caverns
The “cenotes” in caverns have a limited access because they are located deeper in the ground. These are the best examples of why Mayan people consider them portals to the underground. The mysticism majestic and beauty are the “cenotes”unique caractheristics.
In Cenotes and Hacienda Mucuyche you will find two of the most beautiful “cenotes” in the state of Yucatan. The first one is semi-open and the second one is in a cavern. Once in their water you will feel the energy that comes out from the cenotes and it will be imposible not to feel in connection with nature. Dare to live this wonderful adventure.
